YMCMB’s New York signee was arrested over the weekend for carrying loaded gun, and has since posted bail and is free.

Now, the 24-year-old (real name: Peter Cory Pankey, Jr.) is speaking out about the ordeal, calling it a “big mistake.”

“This was a big mistake on my part,” Gunz told the New York Daily News. “I didn’t have any intentions of harming anyone or committing a criminal activity. So many young people look up to me and I need to fight though this.”

Cory was busted at around 2 pm on Saturday afternoon (January 28), after plain-clothes police officers approached him as he exited a cab. He was searched and authorities discovered a loaded and unregistered Taurus .9mm handgun.

He was and subsequently arrested, and later charged with gun possession.

The rapper tells the paper that he thought he was being robbed because of the police “ran up on him.”

“It’s been really hard, really stressful,” Gunz said. “When the smoke finally clears, people will understand what was going on.”

Gunz is currently free after post $30,000 bail. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of three and 1/2 years.

When the rapper is due back in court was unknown at press time.

There is nothing but sadness that all of it has happened. There was only that while reporting the story of child abuse that emerged from the Penn State campus, and only regret, a regret shared by Paterno, that more wasn’t done to deal with a predator in their midst.

It is unknowable how much of what took Paterno in the end was his age, the cancer, the withering illnesses that sap the elderly in winter, or the effects of the scandal. He always feared what would happen if he ever quit coaching, and that might be a large part of why he never did. It affected him to the core when his friend Bear Bryant died just weeks after retiring as the coach of Alabama. He always said he was convinced the two things were linked.

Paterno didn’t retire. He was fired by the board of trustees, a group that now seems intent on justifying its actions to the public as a substitute for actually explaining them. Whether Paterno should or shouldn’t have been removed is not the debate for this moment, anyway.

He will be remembered as a great football coach, among the best of all time. He will be remembered as a great philanthropist, giving away, along with his wife, huge amounts of money to charitable causes. He will be remembered as the greatest promoter of Penn State University, lifting the school with his vision of big-league athletics that can coexist with exceptional education. No one brought more attention to the campus and the institution than Paterno, so it is tragically ironic that the last skyrocket of attention did so much harm to the school and the coach himself.

Paterno came from a simpler time, and that might have been his undoing. He preferred the early years when, if a player ran afoul of the law, he would take care of it himself and “run his tail off in practice.” He believed in a Norman Rockwell portrait of America that had long since fallen from the wall.

Earlier this month, he sat down with Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post to finally speak publicly of the scandal surrounding former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky and of the victims of Sandusky’s crimes. Dogged in his convictions, Paterno summoned Jenkins back for a second day of interviews even though he had gone from a wheelchair to a bed and would soon be admitted to the hospital.

He repeated that he wished he had done more. He also said that it never occurred to him that Sandusky could have been doing what he allegedly was doing. Paterno said he couldn’t understand why anyone would do that, had never heard of that kind of thing.

There will be time to study all those factors and there will be trials and investigations and commissions and reports. None of them will change the good things Paterno did in his life or the good he wished for the school. None of them will lessen the tragedy, either. It has unfortunately become attached to his memory as well.

Joe Paterno wouldn’t want to hear all the praise that will be said in that memory in the next days and weeks. “C’mon. Get off it,” he would say. He considered himself just a football coach who tried to do his job the right way. And then he could pull a book from a distant shelf, turn to Browning, and recite that man’s reach should always exceed his grasp.

He never worried about reaching too far, and now it no longer matters.

Moderate levels of alcohol delivered an increase in longevity among test subjects in a recent study that Steven Clarke, UCLA professor of chemistry and biochemistry and senior author on a study published yesterday in the journal PLoS One, described as “shocking”.

“This finding floored us” he told the UCLA newsletter.

The booze boost was particularly strong for test subjects put under stressful conditions, with the scientists noting that the addition of small amounts of pure alcohol produced significantly more robust looking subjects, compared to a control “teetotal” group.

The test subjects in this case were worms, though the scientists, and indeed the Register editorial team believe the research is highly likely to be applicable to humans.

The C elegans worms tested are often used as a model in experiments into human ageing, and indeed we share half of our genes with the soft-bodied mud-munchers.

The discovery came about accidentally in an experiment that was originally intended to test reactions to cholesterol. Tiny amounts of ethanol were used to dissolve the cholesterol in the liquid surrounding the worms. The scientists were stunned to see that it doubled the lifespan of worm larvae from an average of 10-15 days to 20-30.

Further tests found that it was the alcohol that turned out to give the magic life-boost rather than cholesterol.

Stressed worms benefited particularly strongly from the drink:

What is even more interesting is the fact that the worms are in a stressed developmental stage. At high magnifications under the microscope, it was amazing to see how the worms given a little ethanol looked significantly more robust than worms not given ethanol.

Researcher Shilpi Khare suggested that the benefits could come from the biochemical reactions that the alcohol unleashed:

We show that very low doses of ethanol can be a worm ‘lifesaver’ under starvation stress conditions,” Khare added. “While the mechanism of action is still not clearly understood, our evidence indicates that these 1 millimeter–long roundworms could be utilizing ethanol directly as a precursor for biosynthesis of high-energy metabolic intermediates or indirectly as a signal to extend life span. These findings could potentially aid researchers in determining how human physiology is altered to induce cardio-protective and other beneficial effects in response to low alcohol consumption.

However, even for worms, binge drinking is not encouraged – if the worms are given much higher concentrations of ethanol, they experience harmful neurological effects and die, the scientists note.

The ideal, life-extending brew doesn’t sound like the most appetizing cocktail: “The concentrations correspond to a tablespoon of ethanol in a bathtub full of water or the alcohol in one beer diluted into a hundred gallons of water,” Clarke said. ®

Despite SOPA being stalled by website protests/blackouts across the web this week, the FBI has stepped in and shut down one of the world’s most popular file-sharing websites, MegaUpload.com.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the FBI shut down the file-sharing giant on Thursday (January 19) and arrested four of the people behind the website as part of a global crackdown against suspected online pirates.

The raid came a day after Washington lawmakers had to delay a vote for two anti-piracy acts — SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) — following protests from major players in the tech industry including Wikipedia and Google.

MegaUpload, which is based in Hong Kong, boasts around 50 million daily users, who are allowed the ability to upload any type of files to their webservers for storage and offers a link to download them for sharing purposes. It’s free, but also offers memberships that give users faster and unlimited amounts of transfers.

One of the website’s chief executives is reportedly superproducer Swizz Beatz. However, he had no immediate comment about the raid as of press time.

The Department Of Justice claims that the website was responsible for $500 million in losses for various copyright owners, while making a $175 million profit.

Seven people have been charged with online piracy crimes in an indictment unsealed by the FBI, said the Journal. Four of them, including MegaUpload’s alleged founder and senior executives, are already in custody, authorities said.

Those four were arrested in New Zealand, and charged with conspiracy to commit racketeering and criminal copyright infringement.

The federal indictment calls the company “a worldwide criminal organization whose members engaged in criminal copyright infringement and money laundering on a massive scale.”

MegaUpload.com was already engaged in a legal fight with Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Group over a promotional video featuring their artists.

Today, people all over the world are remembering and honoring one of America’s most inspirational leaders — the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Every January, on the third Monday, Americans celebrate his legacy of motivational advocacy for equality for all.

As we reflect on this great American, I want to share some of my thoughts on this outstanding leader who literally changed America and the world.

I have been blessed to serve the people of Virginia in various capacities, with opportunities to engage often with people in the many diverse communities that make Virginia vibrant.

Recognizing and celebrating our diversity makes for a richer society and a better country. Herein lies the brilliance of Dr. King’s dream—that one’s diversity should not be considered a liability, but rather an asset to be valued. And that all of us should be measured, not by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character.

During all my travels around Virginia, the one thing that stands out most to me is that everyone, in every region, without regard to race, ethnicity, religion or gender, wants the same thing. People want a good job so they can provide for their families, good schools to educate their children and safe communities in which to live.

We, as a country, have come a long way towards fulfilling Dr. King’s dream, but we still have work left to do.

As Governor, the most important contribution I made to Dr. King’s dream was to establish accountability and high academic standards for our schools, to make sure that every child had access to a quality education.


In the U.S. Senate, I led the charge for legislation to help remedy the “opportunity divide” created by technological disparities at America’s minority-serving institutions – including the five Historically Black Colleges and Universities we have in Virginia. By increasing access to technology, we leveled the playing field and provided our college students with important tools for success, both in the classroom and the workforce.

The higher one’s educational achievement and preparation, the more one’s earning potential increases. With a good education, one is more likely to secure a better job and better able to support a family. Stable families are the backbone of our society. That’s why, as governor, we created a climate where businesses could thrive. We lowered taxes and burdensome regulations on job-creating businesses, recruited businesses to move to Virginia, and provided businesses with the best workers in the country. And we added more than 300,000 jobs in Virginia during the four years I served as Governor.

This triangle of education, family and jobs is at the heart of Dr. King’s dream.

All public servants should strive to create an environment where everyone, regardless of background, has the unfettered opportunity to go as far as their hard work, diligence and ingenuity will take them. I truly believe this is what Dr. King gave his life for—equal opportunity.

This is a day that we, as Independents, Democrats and Republicans; liberals, moderates, and conservatives; people of all races can come together with unity of purpose to honor a man who personifies what makes America a great country.

Dr. King proved that a determined, positive person can come from a humble background and yet make a profound impact on our communities, states, country and the world. It is in that spirit that I take time to recognize and salute a man who made America a beacon that gave light to a dark world and we are all the better for it.
