kanye qtip 450x297 Music News: Q Tip Signs to G.O.O.D. Music [Press Release]

I was always a Tribe Called Quest, and Q-Tip fan. So Q-Tip signing to G.O.O.D music makes sense for a older artist that wants to regain relevancy. Lets see what happens.

Press Release below,

“I am thrilled to be working with Q-Tip once again,” said Mr. Weiss, who helmed the artist’s releases on Jive Records in the 1990s as a member of A Tribe Called Quest. “He is a respected voice in the music community as shown by his acclaimed solo albums and countless contributions to the work of other artists. His creativity continues to surpass all boundaries of hip-hop, R&B, pop, and jazz. We welcome Q-Tip to the G.O.O.D. Music / Island Def Jam family.”

“I’m excited to be a part of the great iconic Def Jam label,” said Q-Tip. “I’m humbled to be a part of such a storied history. To reconnect with Barry Weiss is a great thing. As far as G.O.O.D. Music, I’m excited to solidify my working relationship with Kanye, and I look forward to all the opportunities that lie ahead in our partnership. I will do my best to present the most cutting edge music I can.”

Q-Tip has been credited as a producer on Kanye West’s revered “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” as well as West’s much-anticipated 2011 collaboration with Jay-Z, “Watch the Throne.” Q-Tip has been in the studio working with Rico Love, Marsha Ambrosius, Kendrick Lamar, and Fiona Apple. He also produced songs on the just-released fourth solo album by bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding.

Q-Tip along with former co-members of hip-hop collective A Tribe Called Quest produced and was heavily involved with the documentary, “Beats, Rhymes, and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest,” released in July 2011. Viewers were able to revisit the group’s rise to prominence and glimpse the start of Q-Tip’s solo career. Fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter of the Q-Tip story leading up to the 2013 release of THE LAST ZULU.

Sample Sundays: G.O.O.D. Music (Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T & 2 Chainz)- “Mercy”

Posted 08 Apr 2012 in MUSIC, Samples

Welcome to Sample Sundays on MTD. I’ve been wanting to start a weekly sample-driven post on here for some time now but I guess it took some new G.O.O.D. Music to finally flip the switch. By now you should be well aware that Kanye dropped  “Theraflu” and “Mercy”  this week and shambled the Internets. The latter is produced by Yeezy’s recent signee, Lifted, and samples the patois chants of late Dancehall Legend. The sample derives from Fuzzy’s intro on the Super Beagle song “Dust A Sound Boy” produced by Winston Riley.

Since it’s probably difficult for those of us unfamiliar with Patois to understand Fuzzy’s chants, feel free to read a transcription below along with a stream of G.O.O.D. Music’s Mercy.

“WELL—It is a weeping and a moaning and a gnashing of teeth in the dancehall—and who no have teeth gwine run pon them gums. Caw when time it comes to my sound, which is the champion sound, the bugle has blown so many times, and it still have one more time left, caw the amount of stripe weh deh pon our shoulder. Nah bother sound test we, and them can’t test we. COME Super Beagle and your girl!”

We got the tagged up and bombed version last night but here’s the first single off the G.O.O.D. Music album, “Mercy,” produced by Liftoff without all the unwanted interruptions. My vote for who distributed the most lyrical drugs is as follows: 2 Chainz > Yeezy > Push > Sean.

G.O.O.D. Friday has arrived with the first single off of G.O.O.D. Music’s compilation album. Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz all join forces on “Mercy” which employs production from Yeezy’s newest signee, Liftoff. This song definitely has an ill bounce but the tribal rants between verses don’t mesh well if you ask me. What do you think? Who had the most memorable verse?

Before G.O.O.D. Friday arrives with “Mercy,” Flex delivers us from evil Yeezy limbo and drops a new joint from the G.O.O.D. boss featuring DJ Khaled and Chi-Town’s DJ Pharris. The song is titled “Theraflu” and is produced by “N*ggas In Paris” producer Hit-Boy. Kanye unravels a few personal truths on this one which is rumored to be the first single off DJ Khaled’s sixth LP, Kiss The Ring.

Industry News: Kanye West Sued For Using a Sample

rick ross kanye west studio youheard1 490x326 Industry News: Kanye West Sued For Using a Sample

Lawsuits and sampling music goes hand in hand, just ask Kanye West.

According to Rolling Stone, the hip-hop superstar was recently hit with a lawsuit from singer Robert Poindexter, of the soul band the Persuaders, who claims that West used an uncleared sample of the 1972 hit “Trying Girls Out” on the remix of “Girls Girls Girls”, which appeared on his 2006 mixtape, Freshman Adjustment 2.

Poindexter claims that he tried to contact West, in an attempt to settle the matter out of court, but he refused to discuss it.

“I have offered to resolve this matter out of court with Kanye West,” Poindexter said. “But in response, he has refused to even discuss any ‘out-of-court’ resolutions whatsoever. Nor has he provided any evidence that he is demanding others to cease and desist from selling the illegal version.”

The mixtape was released as a free download, and was not commercially distributed, so it’s unclear if the lawsuit holds any merit.

Poindexter argues that West “willfully infringed the copyright for private and financial gain by selling and distributing an untold amount of physical and digital copies of the illegal version (mixed tapes/street albums) to the general public on internet downloads and through the mail.”

West recently settled a lawsuit for an unauthorized sample of soul singer Syl Johnson’s “Difference Strokes” for his 2010 My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy record, “The Joy.”

Details about the settlement were unknown.
